Acme Holdings has large customers who need to ensure that their data is being protected in an acceptable way. Those customers will need to enforce compliance on their suppliers, like Acme, because their customers enforce it on them! Regardless of whether the POPI Act or GDPR is being enforced, Acme cannot afford to take risks with sensitive data. Increasingly, a business without proper compliance won’t be a business at all.

Setting the data scene
Acme’s CRM, containing huge amounts of customer data, uses a cloud-hosted SQL database which is patched and secure. Backups are encrypted and stored on a separate cloud-hosted platform.
All of Acme’s files, some of which also contain customer data, are stored on a local file server and get emailed between users all the time. Permissions on the file server are out-of-date and not maintained.
A compliance and data security problem! Whilst Acme’s CRM application contains most of its sensitive information, and is patched and secure, the real risks lie in the local file server and use of email to share files. The CRM application could have the best security in the world and it won’t help when an employee’s laptop, full of sensitive emails and files, gets stolen.
