Dell and Microsoft have announced a collaboration to deliver a joint Internet of Things (IoT) solution to help customers simplify deploying their IoT solutions from the edge to the cloud. With Microsoft’s Azure IoT applications, VMware Pulse IoT Centre and Dell Edge Gateways, customers will access streamlines management, centralised monitoring and security from devices to the cloud.

Due to the increased interest in IoT, businesses are investing significant resources into the technology. They are researching IoT solutions that can adhere to IT policies and suit their business needs. These businesses want to harness the power of AI and real-time decision making whilst making sure all internal standards are met. This solution from Dell and Microsoft will make it easier for customers to deploy and manage IoT devices on their network.

According to a joint statement from both companies, the solution offers an underlying IoT infrastructure, monitoring and management capabilities and security for customers to deploy IoT for scenarios such as predictive management and others.

Microsoft Azure IoT Edge will deliver the solution at the edge. It utilizes cloud intelligence to edge devices so that these devices can act locally and leverage the cloud for global co-ordination and machine learning. The solutions will also deliver management and monitoring with VMWare Pulse IoT Centre. This will provide more security, management and monitoring of certified edge devices including gateways, connected IoT devices, bios and operating systems.

This ecosystem will be built over time and will involve deeper integration and certification as it learns to support customer needs. The combined solution will use high-performance Dell Edge Gateways. These gateways are IoT device with powerful processors connected to a variety of wired and wireless devices and systems in order to analyse and send relevant data to the cloud.

Head, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and IOT GTM at Dell EMC, Chris Wolff, said: “When we unveiled the Dell Technologies IoT division last fall, we committed to leaning on the Dell Technologies family of businesses to engineer the right solutions to meet customer needs in conjunction with our partner ecosystem. This collaboration will enable customers to implement IoT more seamlessly, for better and faster ROI.”

Vice President IoT Solutions, Microsoft, Ruston Panabaker, said: “When businesses deploy secure intelligent edge to cloud solutions, they can take full advantage of the digital transformation opportunities IoT represents. By delivering this integrated edge to cloud solution, Microsoft and Dell technologies are making it easier for customers to empower their employees, optimise operations and reimagine their products, services or even business models.”
